Happy belated Easter slideshow

I’m at little slow on the blog updates lately, due to about a million things going on in my life right now and a huge dearth of free time. That’s my lame excuse for why this Easter post is six days late. Anyway, we had a great Easter. We spent the morning here at the house. Oliver and Owen got Easter baskets and posed for a few pictures before Oliver darted over to play with his new trains.

Then we headed over to Sarah’s parents house, where we let Oliver and our sister-in-law (it was her first time, since she’s Indian) hunt for eggs. Afterward, we had a great meal. Everybody was tired when we got home.

Below is a slideshow from our day. Enjoy.

Our visit with Jennifer and trip to the zoo

My sister Jennifer flew down for a few days to meet Owen and hang out with our family. We had a blast, and we already miss her.

Oliver really took a liking to his aunt. They were buds every day, wrestling, playing trains, throwing sticks and going for walks. Jennifer seemed to bond with Owen, too. Well, as best a person can bond with a newborn. She did change at least one diaper, so that counts for something, right?

Anyway, it was fun. For her last day here, we all headed down to the St. Louis Zoo. It was about 80 degrees, and I read somewhere that 30,000 people were there. It was packed. Oliver really liked the carousel, train and elephants. Below are a few photos from our day. Enjoy.

‘Oh no, baby Owen!!!’

A lot of people have asked me, “How does Oliver like his little brother?” Well, there’s really not a simple answer. If I had to choose one word, I’d say “indifferent.” For the most part, he doesn’t seem too interested in Owen. However, Oliver does get interested when Owen’s crying or, really, makes about any noise.

After hearing Owen, Oliver yells out one of two things:

  • “Oh no, baby Owen!” (sounds more like, “Oh no, bay-bowen!”)

  • “He’s crying!” (sounds like a scary “heee’s cry-eee!”)
It was funny and cute at first, but imagine hearing the same couple lines over and over again. Here’s a short clip – put in on repeat about 100 times and that’s our day! Enjoy:

Oliver at age 2

Since we never really got into working on Oliver’s baby book, this blog has served as the on-the-record account of his life. As most of you know, he turned 2 a couple weeks ago. That being said, Sarah and I been talking a lot about documenting Oliver’s interests and related facts. In random order, Oliver at age 2:

  • Weighs 30.5 pounds
  • Stands 35 inches tall
  • Loves “Thomas & Friends,” both the show and his train toys (he pushes his trains around the track for up to an hour at a time)

 Photobucket

  • Also loves watching “Sesame Street” and “Dora the Explorer”
  • Has favorite stuffed animals such as the kitty he sleeps with and his “Super Grover”
  • Knows how to say his ABCs
  • Can name about 20 letters if I draw them on his dry-erase board
  • Can count to 15
  • Can, allegedly according to my mother-in-law, count to 10 in Spanish (I’ve yet to hear it)
  • Loves books, especially being read to
  • Has favorite books like “Hop on Pop,” “Cat and the Hat,” “Clifford,” “Ready, Set, Go” and “Guess How Much I Love You”

Photobucket

  • Likes to eat foods like yogurt, cheese, applesauce and diced peaches
  • Enjoys using a fork to dip his meatballs and chicken nuggets in ketchup
  • Grabs your legs during breakfast and begs for a sip of your orange juice
  • Loves to play outside, especially picking up sticks in the yard and then throwing them into the ditch behind our house

 Photobucket

  • Has a vocabulary that amazes more and more each day (how does he learn so many words?)
  • Enjoys turning the stereo on and “dancing” (mostly spinning in circles) then yelling out, “Change the channel” when he doesn’t like a song or when commercials come on the air
  • Never fusses when it’s time to go to bed or take a nap – he often asks us to put him to sleep
  • Loves his footie dinosaur pajamas, sometimes getting upset when they’re not clean
  • Still listens to the same Elizabeth Mitchell CD before he goes to sleep, whether for the night or a nap – if you change the CD, he gets upset
  • He can sing, word for word, many of the songs on that CD such as “You Are My Sunshine”
  • Also likes looking at his light projector when falling to sleep (usually, it’s stars and the moon moving across the ceiling)
  • Runs over to the dog’s bed and yells for me to come over and tickle him – he evens pulls his shirt up so I can dig into his ribs, and has the best, sweetest laugh
  • Has deep blue eyes that will surely pierce girls’ hearts some day
  • Loves his little brother, though he still isn’t sure what to do with him (sometimes Oliver will just touch his hair)
  • Enjoys giving “family hugs,” in which he puts his arm around me and Sarah and squishes his face between ours
  • Also enjoys giving family hugs with me and the dog
  • Still calls the dog “Nah-dee” even though he can now pronounce “Molly”
  • Stands at the door while I walk Molly around the yard so she can go to the bathroom (Oliver often helps by yelling out, “Go poop!”)
  • Has just started getting into our Skype calls with my parents and sisters, interacting with them and talking to them over the laptop
  • Enjoys helping around the house, whether cleaning up his toys or putting clothes into the washer and dryer

Finally, Oliver at age 2 could not be loved more by his parents. He’s changed our lives completely, bringing in new feelings of love and happiness that could never be replicated. We love him so much. Oliver, at age 2, makes us happy and proud. We can’t wait to take part in the rest of his life.

Oliver’s second birthday

I can’t believe our little baby is 2 years old. Yes, Oliver today celebrated the big 2; his second birthday. We had a fun little party – just family, but still more than 20 people packed into our house. Oliver had a blast, and he enjoyed being the center of attention.

He got a lot of great gifts. This is the pretty rad Schwinn trike that Sarah and I bought for him:

Here’s one of the first family photos of the new group of four – too bad Oliver was more interested in being put down so he could run up the hill and throw sticks into the woods:

Here’s Oliver opening a present. He didn’t need any help getting the wrapping paper off, though mom had to read the cards and dad or his grandpa Rodney had to cut the toys loose from the packaging:

His favorite thing right now is Thomas & Friends, and he got a bunch of wood tracks to play with. We’ve since built a pretty elaborate track, but we set up a simple one at first because he was so anxious to play with it. Here he is, taking Thomas for a loop around the track with his grandpa Neal:

He also got a pretty cool Little Tikes basketball hoop from his uncle Aaron and aunt Shima. Here he is dunking, with assistance from Aaron:

Last night, we practiced blowing out candles so that his big moment today would be a success. Well, he now knows what to do but just doesn’t great a big enough jet stream to get the fire out, so Sarah and I had to help a bit:

We didn’t, however, have to help him eat the cake:

We had so much fun today, and he was beyond tired after the guests all headed home. His aunt Carrie and her boyfriend Eli enjoyed the visit, too, as seen in this picture:

So that’s it. Our boy is now 2. Crazy. He’s on his way to being a young man, I’m sure, before we even know it!

A bit more about Owen August’s first day; plus Oliver meets his little brother

Owen August’s first day has been a good one. He came into this world crying, but has been pretty quiet since. He picked up feeding right away, and has been doing well all day. In terms of measurements, he’s 7 pounds, 13 ounces, and his length is 20.5 inches. Here’s a little bit more about our day:

We checked in at about 5:50 a.m., and were prepped fur surgery. The delivery was quick and easy (but it was surgery, so not THAT easy – just relatively so). Afterward, we headed to the recovery area for about an hour. Both sets of grandparents arrived around 9 a.m., so we brought them into the room in pairs (only two guests at a time). First, the grandmas, then the grandpas. Those were really sweet moments.

Next, Owen was whisked to another area of the hospital for measurements. After we settled into our permanent room, I took the grandparents and Oliver down to the cafeteria for lunch. It was only 11 a.m., but I was STARVING! When we came up, we let Oliver into the room to meet his little brother. Tired and ready for a nap, Oliver wasn’t too interested. He just stared at Owen, as seen in one of the first pictures of their encounter here:

And here:

Eventually, we negotiated with Oliver. “Give him a kiss and we can go and you can take a nap.” He complied:

Then he grabbed my mom’s hand to leave. Everyone was gone by 1 p.m. We had a quiet afternoon, napping, bonding with Owen, talking to nurses and watching U.S.A. destroy Finland by a score of 6-1 in the Winter Olympics quarterfinal game.

Sarah’s Aunt Kay arrived around 5 p.m. and stayed for an hour. After that, I grabbed lunch, we bonded more with Owen and now we’re just waiting another 90 minutes until his next feeding. In fact, as I type this, Sarah and Oliver are both sleeping. They both look so innocent.

Sarah is feeling – and appears – much better after this surgery than she did two years ago after the emergency delivery of Oliver. She just ate some Cheerios, which was significant as it was the first solid food she was allowed to eat since last night. She’s been such a proud, sweet mom today:

We hope to be in bed by about 10 p.m., and we have a busy day on Saturday with lots of guests stopping by. Should be fun.

Oliver, you’re going to be a big brother soon

Photobucket

Oliver … he has no clue what’s coming. In just under a week, our second son arrives. Though the chances Oliver will ever read this blog post are slim, I thought it would be a good time to write out a little message to the boy. If he could understand, this is what I’d tell him:

Oliver, you’re going to be a big brother soon.
Your mommy and daddy love you very much, and we will love our new son, too.
He’s going to be your little buddy.
Oh, sure, you’re going to fight on occasion.
But you will be the best of friends.
He’ll be a friend for life.
A friend who plays catch and passes pucks with you.
A friend who pulls for you and encourages you to be the best in everything you do.
A friend who comforts you through life’s highs and lows.
A friend who stands with you at your wedding, holds your children and grandchildren.
And a friend to console you when I’m gone.

You will have so much to teach your little brother.
He won’t be tiny for long.
Soon, he’ll be crawling, then walking, then talking, then singing and saying his ABCs, just like you.
He’s going to look up to you, so you need to be a good boy.
You’ll be his role mode – he’s going to try to be like you.

I can’t wait to see the two of you grow up together, side by side.
After the baby arrives, our lives will never be the same again.
Soon there will be four of us – well, five counting Molly.
Oliver, you’re going to be a big brother soon – a big, proud brother.
We love you very much.

Twinkle, twinkle, little future rock star (or choir boy)

During Oliver’s 23 months on this Earth, we’ve spent many a night up late with him, feeding him bottles, soothing him back to sleep and singing him songs. Early on, he seemed interested in “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star,” and Sarah would sing it to him regularly. After a while, she tired of singing the same lyrics over and over, so he came up with her own verse:

“Silver, silver shining moon
I will see you oh so soon
When the sun has gone to bed
And you rest you sleepy head
Silver, silver shining moon
I will see you oh so soon.”

Simple, I know, but at least some variety. Anyway, Oliver continues to take a liking to the song. Lately, we’ve been catching him singing Sarah’s version of the song. It’s pretty cool. I captured a good clip of him doing “Silver, Silver, Shining Moon” two nights ago. Enjoy:
